Chess Skills: Rating Estimation
http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2009/05/rating-estimation.html
It seems that a lot of chess players new to or unacquainted with tournament chess want to know their rating. Others who have played online, but not OTB (over the board) frequently ask how one rating compares to another. There are several ways to estimate one's rating, but all should be treated with skepticism. The series of ten problems. When I returned to the Spokane Chess Club in fall 1995, I told the club's contact person that I thought I might be an A Class player. But, at my first club meeting, ...

Chess Skills: Wednesday Morning
http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2015/04/wednesday-morning.html
My personal chess training has suffered the past couple of weeks. Although I continue to go through my Game of the Week from the selection in GM-RAM: Essential Grandmaster Knowledge. My understanding of the past few games has been superficial. Other priorities have both limited my time and disrupted my focus. I am the tournament director for the Washington State Elementary Chess Championship. This year is my second time running the event. I wrote about the first in " Advice for Organizers. Chess Skills: The Training Standard
http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-training-standard.html
Rashid Ziyatdinov, GM-RAM. This elementary ending should be easy. It is one in my collection of pawn endgame flash cards. And hence I have used it in training exercises with young students. I must admit, however, that I do not look at this position and instantly know that White's forward pawn must be sacrificed. Rather, I get there through calculation or from trail and error. The first position is a draw no matter who is on move. The second is a draw if Black is on move, but a win if White moves first.

Chess Skills: Advice for Organizers
http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2009/04/advice-for-organizers.html
While I was the event coordinator for the 2009 Washington State Elementary Chess Championship, my beloved served as the event's treasurer and volunteer coordinator. When the time for the event arrived, she joined the hospitality coordinators at the check-in and information tables. These tables might be dubbed problem central. There were and will always be problems large and small in a large event. These problems must be solved, often by people who must think on their feet after inadequate sleep. For spec...

Chess Skills: The Crooked Path
http://chessskill.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-crooked-path.html
Most chess players are familiar with a famous pawn ending composed by Richard Reti in 1921. The Black king is in the square of White's pawn, but White's king is not in the square of Black's h-pawn. Nonetheless, White is able to draw by moving the king in a manner than both chases the enemy pawn and threatens to assist his own. 1Kg7 h4 2.Kf6 Kb6 3.Ke5. A similar idea is presented from a 1947 study by Ladislav Prokeš in Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual. 1Kc8 Kc6 2.Kb8 Kb5 3.Kb7 Kxa5 4.Kc6. Square of the pawn.
