quiet light falling: February 2011
http://quietlightfalling.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
A blog for my thoughts. Thursday, February 17, 2011. Ruby and json vs xml marshalling. I've been watching a silent war rage between the ruby community with its preference for JSON and RESTful services and the Java community with its preference for XML and SOAP. The rdoc for Nokogiri snarks at the Java community with a simple quote:. XML is like violence - if it doesn’t solve your problems, you are not using enough of it.". I sat back in disgust and thought to myself,. Everything is an element! Http:/ www...

A blog for my thoughts. Friday, October 4, 2013. The twisting path of Obamacare and the Insurance Industry. Nothing ever makes sense in politics until you follow the money. Everyone will benefit from new rights and protections that start January 1, 2014. These include:. Insurance company accountability through the 80/20 Rule. Is this the real reason for the shutdown? But why is the 'tea party' conservative core in the House being supported by small businesses against a reduction in costs from such a cap?

A blog for my thoughts. Thursday, December 23, 2010. How do you "freeze" individual gems in Rails 3? Ok, this wasn't documented anywhere, (the best I could find was the Rails 3.0 announcement. And the Bundler rationale. So after reading the Rails guide I hacked around with it on my own. In the old days (Rails 2) you could do something like this:. And it would take the required gems and copy them into vendor/gems. There is one way of doing this:. Bundle install - deployment. But that copies everything.

A blog for my thoughts. Sunday, July 17, 2011. Trial and Error and the God Complex. I just saw Tim Harford's TED talk: Trial and Error and the God Complex. Harford makes some good arguments for evolutionary, "trial and error" approaches to solving complex problems. There are also significant risks. This allows the genetic algorithm to incrementally improve the design without actually knowing how the design works, by passing traits that contribute to passing the fitness function. Asimov warned us of this ...

A blog for my thoughts. Monday, November 22, 2010. Are entropy and risk related? A friend of mine who is a plasma physicist posted a personal version of his presentation. On the nature of the instability generated by a Maxwell's Demon wire-array. Well who doesn't like Maxwell's Demon. The little imp who goes around subverting Newton's Second Law of Thermodynamics by decreasing entropy? Markets and quants may be able to locally lower risk through use of financial derivatives, but ultimately, in the large,...

A blog for my thoughts. Monday, July 11, 2011. Good Lesson, but not universal. Aaron Iba explains in his blog. That his iPhone game led him to a new way of thinking about development that he thinks makes him a better programmer and startup founder. The key distinction is not learning styles, nor even an MIT background, but rather asking the question: "what is the opportunity cost for my solution? Well, if you've ignored the opportunity costs and your solution fries a thousand people in an aircraft, or ta...
