SIXTEEN BIT - A NEW ERA STARTED . 1981 started IBM with their halfhearted try to establish a 16 bit CPU in a computer,. The model 5150 with an Intel 8088 was not really a success. But almost the same concept (with the same CPU) exploded on the market with the model 5160, the IBM PC/XT . only a hard drive was added, and of course a bit more memory, the famous 640KB barrier was reached. And their strongest rival, Commodore, shows their Amiga 1000 in 1985 the first time.

CP/M software - still a lot of highlights. CP/M development was started from Digital Research in 1975. There exists several versions for different processors, started for the Intel 8080 and the compatible processors like Zilog Z80 and the Intel 8085, later for the Intel 8086, Zilog Z8000 and also for the Motorola 68000. A real beauty, this IBM PS/2 P70 - a 386 based machine with an ESDI harddrive. The plasma display is - if it works - not too bad, see the second picture driving Pole Position II. Commodore and CP/M - it works! Both, C64 and the C128 are CP/M capable. The first CP/M capable Commodore was not the C128. Instead, the C64. Got an additional cartridge with a Z80 (with 4 Mhz, but effective with about 3 Mhz, see here. Inside. Unfortunately the C64 had only 40 cols/screen, so only the C128 had a kind of commercial success with CP/M. The Commodore 128, a multi-talent. Which was able to handle over 140 floppy disk formats.
