Lunch Blog: 30 Rock's Buffalo Chicken Shake
http://www.lunchblogkc.com/2011/11/30-rocks-buffalo-chicken-shake.html
Tuesday, November 8, 2011. 30 Rock's Buffalo Chicken Shake. All that wingy deliciousness, now with significantly less of that annoying chewing. WGN America invited me to New York for a 30 Rock. Roundtable last month. However, they had an ulterior motive for extending an invitation to this Superfan in particular - three days before I flew out, WGN America issued me a challenge. Make the Buffalo Chicken Shake. You read that right - the Buffalo Chicken Shake. It's from the beginning of the 30 Rock. Due to m...

How to Boil Water and Other Random Thoughts: Movie Review: Lincoln
http://wrytir.blogspot.com/2012/12/movie-review-lincoln.html
How to Boil Water and Other Random Thoughts. My ideas are my own. Wednesday, December 12, 2012. Growing up in Illinois and loving history, I developed a strong admiration for Abraham Lincoln as a child. Still, nothing prepared me for the awesomeness of seeing Daniel Day Lewis on the big screen made up to look like the President, affecting that slight Kentucky twang, and showing just a bit of the angst the real Lincoln must have felt watching his union being torn in two. Lunch Blog: QuikTrip’s Loaded Potato Rollers
http://www.lunchblogkc.com/2011/08/quiktrips-loaded-potato-rollers.html
Monday, August 8, 2011. QuikTrip’s Loaded Potato Rollers. The latest creation from the QT food Frankensteins is a garlicky monster. About a month ago, I saw a sign at a QuikTrip. I kept checking back at the roller grill wonderland for weeks to no avail, when out of nowhere QuikTrip blindsided me with the brand new Loaded Potato Roller. While it wasn’t a Cheesy Mac Log, I wasn’t about to wait to try it. The texture of the potatoes is akin to wall spackle. Light and fluffy wall spackle that looks like ...

Lunch Blog: Taco Bell Breakfast
http://www.lunchblogkc.com/2014/03/taco-bell-breakfast.html
Friday, March 28, 2014. I have run for the border in the cold, harsh light of morning. From whomever’s mind sprung forth the Waffle Taco, I would like to shake what I’m guessing is your sticky, syrupy hand. Ever since my friend Josh and I heard about it, we’d been jonesing to try one. We were deep into planning a road trip to a Taco Bell. Breakfast menu test location when the news hit — First Meal was rolling out nationwide on March 27, 2014. Here’s what I had. Waffle Taco with Sausage ($1.99). The hash ...

Lunch Blog: M & M Bakery & Deli
http://www.lunchblogkc.com/2015/03/m-m-bakery-deli.html
Tuesday, March 31, 2015. M and M Bakery and Deli. All that and a pointless sized bag of chips. There’s no way I can resist a sign that says “Home of the Hook ‘Em Up.” It promises a gigantic sandwich, as well as a zesty approach to the art of sandwichery and that of life itself. So Shaw and I ventured to M and M Bakery and Deli. Unwrapping the CEO, we discovered a party sub amount of toppings on a bun that could just barely hold them all. “Like when you see a big guy wearing a tiny hat,” S...It’s be...

Lunch Blog: September 2014
http://www.lunchblogkc.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Tuesday, September 16, 2014. Putting the gas back in gastronomy. It may sound blasphemous, but if we’re being honest, QuikTrip. Is our favorite gas station restaurant. We love the roller. And QT certainly gets you in and out quicker than Oklahoma Joe’s, even if they don’t have a Z-Man. Held at a new QT the day before it opened, we arrived and were told to step up and use the touchscreen to order whatever we wanted. This may be the closest we ever get to a Wonka’s Chocolate Factory experience. Like Lunch ...

Lunch Blog: QuikTrip’s Buffalo Chicken Bites
http://www.lunchblogkc.com/2010/02/quiktrips-buffalo-chicken-bites.html
Friday, February 19, 2010. QuikTrip’s Buffalo Chicken Bites. Because sometimes I don’t want taquitos, except for the fact that I always want taquitos. Buffalo Chicken Bites are the latest addition to QuikTrip’s. So on our way to see RJD2. Buffalo Chicken Bites are 2 for $2 or $1.19 each, and I think having the word bite in the name is misleading. While you can take bites of one, the item in and of itself doesn’t constitute a bite per se. Unless you consider a bite to be the size of roug...I wasn’t ...

Dinnertime: What I Made for Dinner: October 18, 2012
http://dinnersbyjodi.blogspot.com/2012/10/what-i-made-for-dinner-october-18-2012.html
From 5 to 8 pm in the suburban Great Plains. Thursday, October 18, 2012. What I Made for Dinner: October 18, 2012. It's fall, the weather is changing, the daylight is fading, I'm slammed with grading papers, and I'm reading a Russian novel. What else to make besides beef Stroganoff (in the slow cooker, of course)? Of all things, why read a Russian novel, and why now? I'm reading Cancer Ward by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. It's a powerful reflection on illness and its oppressions. I needed to read it. And this...

From 5 to 8 pm in the suburban Great Plains. Tuesday, March 13, 2012. What I Made for Dinner: March 13, 2012. Cajun-spiced tofu and grits with spinach and corn. Listen to me: If I walk in the door after a long day at work, and you greet me by yelling at me and tattling on your brother, and the news of the day is how some of you were mean to the dog, you are getting tofu, grits, and spinach for dinner. From 5 to 8 pm in the suburban Great Plains. Tuesday, October 23, 2012. What I Made for Dinner: October 23, 2012. Penne Alfredo with chicken, broccoli, and roasted garlic. Most of this dinner was leftovers. (The very best kind of leftovers, covered in butter, cream, and cheese. Mmmm.). On Sunday, something cool happened. Round-Trip America. Stopped at my house! While she was here, we ate at the Free State Brewery (one of the eight wonders. Oven-roasted potatoes and artichoke hearts. Most of that stuff ge...
