Apartment Biology: July 2009

http://apartmentbiology.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

Natural history and other activities in the Pacific Northwest. Thursday, July 30, 2009. I took a few trips this week to escape the oppressive heat of Portland (107 degrees on Tuesday) and our apartment that will not cool down. Over the weekend, it was at least twenty degrees cooler on the coast. Sarah, her grandfather Fred, Andie the Dog, and I surveyed dead seabirds on the beach north of Sand Lake. On Tuesday, Fred, his son Rich, and I drove north to Seattle to catch a pair of Mariners baseball games.

Apartment Biology: Foggy Bay Birding

http://apartmentbiology.blogspot.com/2009/12/foggy-bay-birding.html

Natural history and other activities in the Pacific Northwest. Tuesday, December 22, 2009. Sarah and I spent a soggy Weekend Before Solstice at Pacific City. On Saturday, we conducted out monthly bird survey of Bob Straub State Park, then drove north to Netarts Bay. We had hoped to find a Snowy Owl that has set up shop near the end of a spit. Unfortunately, the bay was socked-in by fog. There was no owl to be seen, but we did find a Peregrine Falcon and many diving birds. Maybe next month.

Apartment Biology: February 2009

http://apartmentbiology.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html

Natural history and other activities in the Pacific Northwest. Saturday, February 28, 2009. Our dog has made it clear that she no longer enjoys walking around our neighborhood due to the nonstop construction noise, so we took a walk at Dawson Creek Park. We checked on the great horned owl nest and were pleased to see an adult in place. We walked east of the owl to check on a red-tailed hawk nest in a large oak. The nest is still up there and the adults were flying around, but they did not go to the nest.

Apartment Biology: September 2009

http://apartmentbiology.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html

Natural history and other activities in the Pacific Northwest. Wednesday, September 30, 2009. The Wait is Over. Fall has finally arrived! Several chilly rainstorms have come through, putting an end to our unseasonably warm weather, at least for now. Some of the trees are losing their leaves and wintering birds such as cackling geese and glaucous-winged gulls have arrived in the metro area, further indicating a change in seasons. I need to put in an order for woolly gloves. Sunday, September 27, 2009.

Apartment Biology: October 2009

http://apartmentbiology.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Natural history and other activities in the Pacific Northwest. Tuesday, October 27, 2009. Rainy Days and Pumpkins. After a particularly dry summer and early fall, western Oregon is finally getting the rain it needs. The ornamental trees in the neighborhood are reaching their peak of brightness, as are the well-manicured lawns. Tuesday, October 20, 2009. Some larch branches had recently blown down. This branch had landed on top of another engraved by beetles. We could have hiked around the lake all day, b...

Eating the Willamette Valley: My trip to Greensland

http://eatingthevalley.blogspot.com/2008/05/my-trip-to-greensland.html

May 26, 2008. My trip to Greensland. On my recent trip to Greensland I have become acquainted with many interesting characters. Most are friendly, tasty creatures, but others are more sinister. Atop a pizza I met oregano, arugula, and crinkly wrinkly cress. The oregano gave the parsley pesto a great aroma, the arugula was peppery, and the crinkly wrinkly cress was crazy. It tasted like radishes and a little bit was enough to sprinkle all over our pizza and salad. Labels: beaverton farmers market. Subscri...

Eating the Willamette Valley: Salad anyone?

http://eatingthevalley.blogspot.com/2008/05/salad-anyone.html

May 21, 2008. Seriously, does anyone have a good recipe for salad dressing? Today was the very first day of our Abundant Harvest CSA. I was looking forward to it all day, and had to try hard to not run down there at 3:00 when it opened. Max and I drove a few miles north to the farm and met our new farmer friends, Steve and Mish. They had warned us that the farm was starting up slowly due to the crazy cold weather that we'd had, but now I think they were sandbagging. 2 big bags (really big) of lettuce mix.

Eating the Willamette Valley: Deja Pesto

http://eatingthevalley.blogspot.com/2008/05/deja-pesto.html

May 1, 2008. Tonight we had a ravioli dish inspired by a great one that I had on Orcas Island on our honeymoon. We took Rising Moon. Chanterelle ravioli and served it in a mix of our homemade stock and our leftover homemade pesto. Then we dipped Marsee Bakery sourdough bread in the liquid and it was so tasty. I think the original had heirloom tomatoes too, but our tomato plant is about 6 inches tall right now, so I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. Hi Sarah. Your meal sounds delicious!

Eating the Willamette Valley: Not-so-instant Pudding

http://eatingthevalley.blogspot.com/2008/05/not-so-instant-pudding.html

May 5, 2008. We bought a few vegetable starts and planted them afterward in my grandfather's garden. I won't spend too much time blogging about all those tiny plants until we start eating them. Andie enjoyed the gardening, especially the part where she broke into the bag of chicken manure and ate a bunch of it. But back to the bread pudding. The recipe. Is from Debbie Madison and was brought to our attention by Barbara Kingsolver in her great book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. May 6, 2008 at 10:33 PM.

Eating the Willamette Valley: June 2008

http://eatingthevalley.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

June 1, 2008. Greetings from the goats of Dos Sequoias Farm. They are glad that goat is not on the menu at the CSA. Pasta is always good, so we made one with asparagus and shiitake mushrooms and the Willamete Valley aged fontina from the Beaverton Market. How could it not be good? The CSA box was very green again with 2 pounds of spinach and lots more lettuce and .bok choy. The few bits of color were provided by radishes and garlic chive flowers. Greta visited on Saturday, and we dug out some frozen mari...

Eating the Willamette Valley: Green dinner

http://eatingthevalley.blogspot.com/2008/04/green-dinner.html

April 29, 2008. Tonight we used the pesto from our local basil to make some risotto that was wonderful buttery goodness. I know that one local ingredient is a bit of a cop out, but it had been awhile since I posted and it was so darn good. We used the recipe for basic risotto from Heidi Swanson's. Book, but we substituted homemade stock for water. Heidi is no relation to me, though we share the same last name. We do both look quite Swedish with our chubby cheeks and big foreheads. An environmental educat...
