For the Love of Math! Open-Middle and Productive Struggle. I tired an open-middle problem with my third graders this week. The idea behind open middle problems is that there are multiple ways to approach and solve them. My particular group of 3 third graders do not experience productive struggle much in math, in fact I think they tend to avoid it at all costs.
