Colombia - Bogota and the Cordillera Central

Colombia - Bogota and the Cordillera Central. The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. Sep 24, 2008. The Castros – part II 13/09/08. After more than 20km of traffic jams and an amazing ciclovia, we arrived to the house of Miriam and Hector Castro. After a long time on the road, we longed for a feeling of home, and staying with the Castro's was exactly what we needed! Just the way Edgar and Luzeye. Welcomed us, Miriam and Hector treated us like family. Gal refused to take th...

Argentina - Ruta 40

Argentina - Ruta 40. The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. Mar 18, 2009. A long first night 08/02/09. We tried hitching a truck. Crossing Paso De Jama. Didn’t turn out as we planned. Rami, with his swollen knee, could barely help Gal pack the camp. We took our time. Going back to San Pedro De Atacama, Chile, would do us no good – a tiny village with no facilities, and, why go back? We were on the way to Argentina! We waited about 2 hours for a hitch to civilization.

Argentina - To Buenos Aires

Argentina - To Buenos Aires. The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. Apr 15, 2009. Cycling over 2 hours through grapevines and wineries. The small, winding road was packed with trucks, overloaded with grapes. We looked back, and barely saw the Andes Mountain range, disappearing. After many kilometers of desert, we reached Difunta Correa. A small oasis (with contaminated water), a famous pilgrimage site; part of the local Christian mythology. The chewiest meat we ever chewed.

Mexico - Baja California

Mexico - Baja California. The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. February 18, 2008. Jim escorted/guided/joined us to the border. It was a calm sunny morning, our last 40km of good roads, wide shoulders and American-courteous drivers. We departed from Jim our host, savior, and new friend just at the border, before the Mexican formalities. The bits we saw of Tijuana were not interesting, a 3’rd world country city, distorted by too many US tourists, crossing the border...

Chile - The North

Chile - The North. The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. Feb 8, 2009. Bienvenidos a Chile 17/01/09. We arrived to Chile immigration, a modern complex, as expected. The Peruvian side was also modern and came as a surprise. We quickly ate all our fresh food (not allowed to be taken into Chile). We tried our best but were sad to leave 2 garlic heads behind…. At the border we met a few motorcyclists (about 10 past us during the whole day! Today we celebrated a year in Latin ...

Colombia - The Caribbean Coast

Colombia - The Caribbean Coast. The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. Monday, August 18, 2008. 6,590 km in. We found ourselves on the sea front, stumbling towards the old city, like drunks or people who have been a week at sea, in search of a hotel. Gal had a terrible headache. We were thrilled by the amount of street food and enjoyed the famous. 8216;arepa con queso’ (the arepas deteriorated the moment we left town). We also bought a Comcel SIM card. We spent 2 more day...

Costa Rica

The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. July 10, 2008. We loaded our gear on the large Lancha, up in front. The boat was full with passengers, but as the boat started moving, everybody fled to the back of the boat, hiding from the light rain, so we had room for the bikes and we sat comfortably with the best views. The boat ride was beautiful. We saw millions of birds and even a monkey (finally, our first monkey). The vegetation was remarkable. Everybody grumpy in the boat.

Ecuador

The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. Nov 27, 2008. We were excited of entering a new country, after 2.5 months in Colombia. Crossing with the bikes was hassle free, as opposed to our previous exit, buy bus. There wasn’t much of a change, south Colombia seems more like a part of Ecuador than of Colombia: the people, the landscape, the prices, and even the bread in Ipiales! One thing did change: $ $! We found a nice hotel with a balcony, had a hot shower, enjoyed our Gran...

Guatemala

The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. May 30, 2008. The few cheap hotels that Rami went to check were built of patches on patches of added rooms and floors, each with its’ own architectural style. Claustrophobic rooms with 2 beds, a lamp, a million mosquitoes, no fan and no window. Around $5 – tempting, but no thanks. We were tempted to stay, but the shitty hotels made us continue. La Mesilla - a real border-town. From our hotel roof. Cooling ourselves in a waterfall.

Honduras

The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. June 13, 2008. Border formalities were quick, a small fee that took us by surprise, that´s it. The euphoria of leaving Guatemala was so strong; we had this stupid grin and a nice downhill. At the border we met Yehonatan, the Israeli motorcyclist we met 3km earlier. He was on the first day of his trip to South America, and just left Guatemala City, after working there a year in security. In the morning we all went to the Maya ruins&#4...

Nicaragua

The Latin America Bicycle Trip. Back to the Latin America bicycle trip. June 25, 2008. Everybody warned us that Nicaragua is hot! But how can it be? We´ve been so long in mountains with perfect cycling weather, except for the rain. But they were correct! The moment we crossed the border the clouds disappeared and it was hot. We thought of staying, we were even invited to crash in by the owner of the internet café (a Bulgarian) but we felt we´re way behind our schedule and Colombia is waiting. A biologist...
