Mountain and Sea Scotland: June 2014

http://mountainandseascotland.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Mountain and Sea Scotland. Hillwalking and Sea Kayaking in Scotland. Sunday, 29 June 2014. Ewe know it makes sense. A couple of free midweek days combined with a great forecast for the north west were too good to miss. An early start from home and the scenic drive over to Aultbea. On Loch Ewe and I was ready to set out by 0930. The weather was gorgeous - warm sunshine and calm; a real "blue sky day". On such days, Ewe know it makes sense to be on the water! Stamped plates on the draw-bar and on the wheel...

Mountain and Sea Scotland: January 2015

http://mountainandseascotland.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Mountain and Sea Scotland. Hillwalking and Sea Kayaking in Scotland. Friday, 30 January 2015. In the bleak midwinter - the icy factor. As we moved deeper into the mountains along the narrow Loch Leven. The wind died to nothing. Paddling seemed effortless, the boats gliding through the quiet water. During this paddle we saw a total of five Otters, including one near this spot contentedly munching on a fish on the shore. To the south. On this short January afternoon the sun was already past its zenith ...

Mountain and Sea Scotland: May 2015

http://mountainandseascotland.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Mountain and Sea Scotland. Hillwalking and Sea Kayaking in Scotland. Saturday, 30 May 2015. Narrow places - exploring the geos of the Angus coast. The delights of the Angus coast from Auchmithie to Arbroath weren't over by any means. We left the beach on which we'd taken luncheon and almost immediately passed the prominent sandstone stack known as the Deil's Heid. There's a perception that the North Sea is always. Except here there was light from above! Next comes Dickmont's Den, a geo formed by an enorm...

Mountain and Sea Scotland: The Kelpies - "stretch up your long necks to greet the sun"

http://mountainandseascotland.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-kelpies-stretch-up-your-long-necks.html

Mountain and Sea Scotland. Hillwalking and Sea Kayaking in Scotland. Tuesday, 28 July 2015. The Kelpies - "stretch up your long necks to greet the sun". Since they first rose out of the regenerated industrial landscape of the Helix Park we’d been intending to visit the much talked-about sculptures at the heart of the project. On a bright day early in the Spring we travelled to meet family and visit the park. Approaching from one of the car parks, the Kelpies. Are an astonishing sight…. At night they are ...

Mountain and Sea Scotland: A seabird spectacle at Fowlsheugh

http://mountainandseascotland.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-seabird-spectacle-at-fowlsheugh.html

Mountain and Sea Scotland. Hillwalking and Sea Kayaking in Scotland. Wednesday, 20 May 2015. A seabird spectacle at Fowlsheugh. A short distance to the south of Stonehaven. The cliffs here are indented by a couple of deep geos which give great views right into the heart of the seabird colonies. The air is a blizzard of wheeling birds at this time of year; dazzling black-and-white against a blue sea. With colourful wildflowers and lichens adding splashes of brilliance to the green of the clifftops. The sh...

TGOC2015 Days 3 & 4 | Around the hills

https://aroundthehills.wordpress.com/2015/05/11/tgoc2015-days-3-4

Walking, camping, taking it easy. TGOC2015 – Days 1 & 2. TGOC2015 Day 5 →. TGOC2015 Days 3 & 4. May 11, 2015. After two days of sun came two days of rain. I decided early during Monday’s walk that I would need a beer that evening so I pushed on the extra couple of km to Tomich. It was a long trudge in the constant rain but worth the effort. There was a mini TGOC party in the hotel and I ate my own body weight in food. This entry was posted in TGO Challenge. TGOC2015 – Days 1 & 2. TGOC2015 Day 5 →. You ar...

Ardnamurchan Point | A quest for Adventure…

https://quest4adventure.wordpress.com/2012/07/21/ardnamurchan-point

A quest for Adventure…. 8230;Tales of a 'wanabe' explorer. The Hag…. →. July 21, 2012. Mike and I took Friday (20th July) off work for a trip around Ardnamurchan Point from Kilchoan to Portuairk… Ardnamurchan is the most Westerly point on the British mainland. We found a little bay (NM437629) for a bite to eat away from the minor swell…. Shortly after, in the bay of An Acairseid, we came across a basking shark… here passing next to Mike’s bow…. We found another bay…. Where I left one trusty steed…. Inter...

Adventures with a Bucket: August 2012

http://adventureswithabucket.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Adventures with a Bucket. A lot can happen in a day. Tuesday, August 21, 2012. One of the things I love about my job is the moments when Mother Nature reminds us that she can squash us whenever she pleases. I am then so grateful when she doesn't wipe us out. If you observe these moments in "normal" life, you'll notice "normal" people running for cover and waiting out the storm. Bri cooking hotdogs as the storm develops some teeth behind her. We incorrectly assumed the storm would miss us. Right as di...

Adventures with a Bucket: July 2011

http://adventureswithabucket.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Adventures with a Bucket. A lot can happen in a day. Saturday, July 30, 2011. Getting to the other side of this big beautiful world. Our first look at the Opera House from the ferry. The group at the Opera House. Exactly a week earlier, I was in a similar city by the bay, watching tons of sailboats. Deja Vu. Bear with me, there's a lot of pictures of birds coming up. The group in front of the falls. I think Carson was about to fall down. Wallaby encounter. They're awfully cute. On our way back from the G...

Adventures with a Bucket: April 2012

http://adventureswithabucket.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html

Adventures with a Bucket. A lot can happen in a day. Monday, April 30, 2012. Adventures with Pajama Dave. What is it about having company that helps you see more of your town than you ever have on your own? I've lived in Fernandina for nearly three years now, yet in the past two days I've seen more of it and learned more about it than I have in all the time I've lived here. Thanks to a visit from mom and Kathleen! Boat Someone should take a look at this thing. Fishing with Ft. Clinch in the background.

Saturday, 20 April 2013. There were big rafts of fulmars just offshore. These ones were forming ever-changing patterns as they were carried on the swells. It was sunny, but extremely windy on top of the cliffs, and we couldn't sit at our favourite 'viewing spot' as it wouldn't have been safe. Instead we moved further along the coast and found some shelter behind some gorse, where we could both enjoy the coconut smell of the gorse, and the clear views along the coast towards Pennan and Fraserburgh.

Saturday, 13 October 2012. Back in the summer holidays (which feels like a loooong time ago now) we visited Fowlsheugh, hoping to see puffins. There were some puffins, though you don't get nearly as close to them as you do some other places I've been. There was plenty to see though - other birds and wildlife and great scenery too. A lovely bird hide. Catterline lighthouse.. Well worth another visit. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A small selection of my photography for sale. Life on a Small Island.

Saturday, 23 June 2012. I've been to the Bullers o Buchan before, but not in springtime. The wild flowers were beautiful. A great bank of red campion and primroses. The views were stunning too, from the Bullers o' Buchan itself. Right up the coast towards Peterhead. Plenty of bird life too. A short walk along the coast you can see Slains Castle in one direction. And the Buchan Ness lighthouse in the other. I must go back again soon and see the bird life as there should be some chicks hatched by now.

Mountain and Sea Scotland

Mountain and Sea Scotland. Hillwalking and Sea Kayaking in Scotland. Sunday, 8 April 2018. A speleological, ornithological, meteorological kind of day (part 2). Continuing on past the sunny beach where the Stonehaven paddlers were taking lunch, we passed behind a stack and back out towards the open sea through a tall and narrow geo. We reflcted that things would be very different in here during an easterly gale with a big swell! A little way north of the geo we entered Old Hall Bay. The pebble shore in O...
