SNOOKER SCENE BLOG: ALI GEED UP BY SHANGHAI WIN
http://snookerscene.blogspot.com/2010/09/ali-geed-up-by-shanghai-win.html
News, opinion and insight from the green baize. ALI GEED UP BY SHANGHAI WIN. Ali Carter’s consistency over the last two years has been the key in him rising to second in the world rankings but, like any top player, what he wants is titles. He won his second ranking event with a hard fought 10-7 victory over Jamie Burnett in the Shanghai Masters. Neither player was at their best. Burnett played some good safety but couldn’t score. In my profile of him. Two months ago, I wrote:. The Shanghai Masters wasn&#...

News, opinion and insight from the green baize. Barnsley is not necessarily the world’s best known sporting mecca but will this week become the latest in a long line of World Snooker qualifying venues. The Metrodome has previously been associated with ten-pin bowling but from tomorrow will play host to the International Championship qualifiers, where the field of 128 will be reduced to 64. Qualifying venues are rarely popular with players, often precisely because they are qualifying venues. Mark Allen fa...

News, opinion and insight from the green baize. I WANT YOUR SIX. I remember interviewing Mark Davis a few years ago. At the time he was rather stuck in the snooker mud, going neither forwards nor backwards. Endless anonymous qualifying matches were yielding little real success. He lost a lot of matches in deciders. At the time Davis was reasonably upbeat. He said he felt he was playing well and needed one good performance to give him the crucial boost of confidence he required to kick on. Davis defends t...

SNOOKER SCENE BLOG: 2013 IN SNOOKER: THE HITS AND MISSES
http://snookerscene.blogspot.com/2013/12/2013-in-snooker-hits-and-misses.html
News, opinion and insight from the green baize. 2013 IN SNOOKER: THE HITS AND MISSES. There is no more snooker this year so it’s time to take stock, preferably with as much food and alcohol as possible. It’s traditional to review the season rather than the calendar year but the whole concept of seasons has become somewhat irrelevant in this era when snooker rolls on and on. No sooner does the World Championship end as the new ‘season’ is about to start. In winning three successive ranking titles, Ding pr...

News, opinion and insight from the green baize. THE MARK OF A CHAMPION. I doubt Mark Williams will get carried away by winning the Rotterdam Open but it marks a welcome return for him to snooker’s winners’ circle. It wasn’t just winning which will give him pleasure but the manner of the victory. He played ultra attacking snooker to edge Mark Selby 4-3. Selby often has the knack of forcing his opponents to play his way. Last night the opposite happened: the more Williams attacked, the more Selby did.

News, opinion and insight from the green baize. Neil Robertson’s eighth world ranking title today may have been his best in terms of the quality of his performance. From 5-2 down to John Higgins in the Wuxi Classic final, Robertson cued superbly as he won six frames in succession before going on to win 10-7. The Australian is as tough as they come. Even after losing a tightly contested 16. He is now more than 6,000 points clear at the top of the world rankings in a campaign which has barely got going.
