The Garden At Number 41

The Garden At Number 41. The Garden At Number 41. May 24, 2014. Bearded Irises and Chelsea. Happily the garden seems to be coping ok at the moment with just this minimal input from me, though I expect that the expanding perennials and shrubs could be concealing some lurking menace that will rear it’s ugly head later in the year, however this has been pushed to the back of my mind. Though my modest collection of bearded Iris can’t possibly compare to the the offering at Chelsea and I have no more ro...

Natural Inspiration – Astonfields Balancing Lake – The Garden At Number 41

https://thegardenatnumber41.wordpress.com/2014/05/02/natural-inspiration-astonfields-balancing-lake

The Garden At Number 41. May 2, 2014. Natural Inspiration – Astonfields Balancing Lake. I expect this will be the first post of probably an irregular series of posts about places that I enjoy visiting and give me inspiration for my own garden or give me a little “headspace” to experience the natural world. The first place that I want to mention is a smallish local nature reserve close to where I work where I often go for a lunchtime walk and maybe do some bird watching. Anyway I digress i presume that th...

The Garden At Number 41. April 17, 2014. Unfortunately I seem to have been lagging behind with posting at the moment as work commitments and a decision to do some DIY work on the bathroom has kept me out of the garden … BOOO! I am getting a bit fretful about my tomato and chilli seeds in the greenhouse which are still to germinate but I guess I need to hold my nerve and be patient. But other greenhouse residents are progressing with overwintered Dahlia and chocolate cosmos tubers sprouting nicely. You ar...

Floral Lawn – The Garden At Number 41

https://thegardenatnumber41.wordpress.com/2014/04/03/floral-lawn

The Garden At Number 41. April 3, 2014. In my continuing crusade against the patchy bit of lawn that remains from the vast mossy expanse that greeted us when we moved in I have been looking for something to do with it for a while. I didn’t want to make it into another area of border as I think I would miss the line of site toward the pond and the patio from the house, plus it gives something for him indoors to mow. About laying a Grass Free Lawn. I have now commenced with the job of knocking out the old ...

Off The Edge Gardening. May 31, 2015. Last week I was in one of your store car parks and my other half said “what is that red flower over there? Off The Edge Gardening. December 20, 2014. December 20, 2014. Yesterday, after a week of rain and gales, it was a pleasant change to experience some winter sunshine at Lavinia and Lionel’s. The day was especially important as it was one of those milestones that we invent for ourselves but all the same are of consequence; it was my last day of work before Christmas. For the record it turned out to be a very satisfying day. It saw the completion (! As is generally the case Phase Two will follow Phase One &...

Before I moved to this neck of the woods my opinion of hydrangeas veered between ‘ambivalent’ and ‘unimpressed’. Slowly, however, I have been won over, especially by some of the less grown varieties. Off The Edge Gardening. November 30, 2014. November 29, 2014. Every piece of wasteland must have a buddleja and we are no exception. Not quite the usual invader of nook and cranny as it is a cultivar planted by the previous owner, probably “Black Knight”. Today its felty, icing sugar-coated leaves mocked me as I once again resolved to sort out this wilderness. Fatsia japonica – Japanese Aralia. November 27, 2014. I have never been a great fan of. Off The Edge Gardening. July 31, 2015. Today Lionel asked me what I thought about when I was weeding. This made me stop to think. In fact there may even have been one of those awkward silences. Unusual. A gap in the conversation doesn’t often happen when I am in the room. It was a fair question, what do I think about when I am weeding. The weeds? The meaning of the universe? The Garden at OJA. A journal of our edible education. Horizons are often difficult to judge. Sometimes things that seem far away turn out to be just over the next hill while other things that seem to be right at hand wind up being miles away. So it is with time. The Garden at Oswegatchie School

The Garden at Oswegatchie School. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Mother Nature Helps Out. Peppers are starting to form! Mother Nature has been very generous with the rain so far this season. We haven't had to use the hose that often. Tonight we were contemplating running over and giving the Garden a drink when the skies opened up and dropped a quick inch and one half of rain down. It's nice to not have to schlep over there so often to water. Tomatoes enjoying the heat. The first of the cucumbers are popping out.
