For my Dad growing up in Northeast Iowa amidst the Norwegian-Americans the words “Hot Dish” meant something completely different than the phrase “Hot Dish” did to the rest of the country during the 1940’s. For Dad, the Hot Dish was a “one-dish-baked-meal” created by his very own “Hot Dish” – a.k.a. my Mother. She really knew how to mix-it-up! Now that’s really ‘ONE NORWEGIAN-AMERICAN HOT DISH! Something’s hot in Amana. What fun to watch the baker skillfully manipulate the peel as he moved the cakes around in the oven. Though more than half a century has passed, the Hahn family is still baking breads and coffee cakes in that oven … and, they still taste like my childhood. Now there’s a second oven in the Colonies and while it’s not baking bread, it is. Baking a different dough for its pizza! Those pizzas don’t need to be in that oven very long. Is the day the Amana is invaded by 80-100 Model A. Vehicles. It has been designated “Throwback Saturday”. In the Colonies and we will have some special things going, from live music at various spots to demonstrations at the Furniture Shop and Woolen Mill. I think the best part of any celebration is the food and there are a few things to look for on this day that you don’t usually find. For example:. The Ox Yoke Inn will be serving Barbecued Ribs. The Ronneburg Restaurant will be featuring German Roulanden.

HEAVENLY MINI BLINIS WITH STRAWBERRY SAUCE- Aliza Scherer. 1 loaf white bread. 8 oz whipped cream cheese. 1 1/2 t vanilla sugar. 1 1/2 sticks butter, unwhipped, melted. 1 container sour cream. 8 oz dessert whip. 1/2 bag frozen strawberries. Sour cream sauce: cut up the frozen strawberries into small pieces, but do not blend. Whip up the dessert whip, add sour cream and strawberries, mix until combined. EN KUGEL- Yehudis Edelstein. It's always a hit every Shavuos! 12 oz cream cheese.
