The Man Who Quit Money (book review) — the halfway point
http://thehalfwaypoint.net/2012/06/the-man-who-quit-money-book-review
The Man Who Quit Money (book review). June 5, 2012. Earn it. Save it. Grow it. Spend it. Give some of it away. These are more or less the basic lessons we learn, directly or indirectly, about money. Whether cash or charge, use of money for a necessity or luxury is as automatic as any natural reflex. Though we don’t all start from the same place and don’t have equal access to it, we. Agree that the legal tender avails us of the goods or services we seek. The Man Who Quit Money. This book is about so much ...

Message from The Rock. May 23, 2012. I see Alcatraz everyday. On most days, it sits like a rare gem floating in liquid sapphire. The bay from a few storeys high is always a mesmerizing view. Everything that surrounds this small island is in constant motion — drifting, swirling, passing through. This past weekend, after five years of look-but-can’t-touch anticipation, son declared [.]. 101 Great Ways to Pack Meaning into a Lifetime — the halfway point
http://thehalfwaypoint.net/2009/10/101-great-ways-to-pack-meaning-into-a-lifetime
101 Great Ways to Pack Meaning into a Lifetime. October 19, 2009. This past weekend, I was a complete grown-up and did a tough thing: I attended a colleague’s daughter’s funeral service. I was sensible to hitch a ride with a dear friend who has two more kids than I do. She, like me, understood the gnawing fear that I imagine all parents have: the fear of losing a child. I also knew Mimi was a fighter. She had Apert’s syndrome. WHAT I DIDN’T KNOW. What I didn’t know about Mimi was how profoundly aff...
50 Simple Ways to Pay It Forward — the halfway point

50 Simple Ways to Pay It Forward. September 28, 2009. Don’t wait for people to be friendly, show them how. Recently, I read a little paragraph in a fellow blogger’s post. About paying it forward and it made me smile. At a toll booth, he paid for his vehicle’s fee and the one behind him. This is something my husband. Once, long after I first started paying it forward on the bridge, I experienced being on the receiving end of this practice. It felt incredible! I remember wanting to express gratitude, but m...
Fifty+ Ways to Say No — the halfway point
http://thehalfwaypoint.net/2010/02/fifty-ways-to-say-no
Fifty Ways to Say No. February 15, 2010. In my last post, I waxed lyrical about the joys of saying yes. After having said no for so long. I listed four imperative questions to which I routinely subject myself before I say. To keep me honest and out of trouble. My blogging buddies Patty. Cheered alongside me for shining a light on the potent and life-giving qualities inherent in a. Shared a humorous Anne Lamott quote that reminds us of the healing powers of saying. And if Albert Camus is right that a rebe...

The Exception: Grace is...
http://miamilf.blogspot.com/2010/10/grace-is.html
Who is The Exception. 06 October, 2010. It is the first glimpse of the sun. The final closing of the eyes when day is done. It is the smile of a stranger. The laugh of a child. The touch of a friend. It is everywhere when we open our hearts. And invisible to us when we close ourselves. It is the waves upon the shore. The rain upon the earth. The floating of a snowflake. The consistency of the mountains. The fire of the stars. It is walking side-by-side in silence. It is seeing beauty in everything. RAOKA...

Who is The Exception. 20 September, 2010. With the end of summer and the beginning of school comes the start of a new ballet season – hours in the studio for my daughter; hours of donated time for me; and the anticipation of the latest and greatest Nutcracker performance. Each performance, is different and dependent upon the skills of the dancers. I have not shared the story below with many – but after reading Aileen. I have watched her perform many times. Watched her transform from soldier to duckli...
The Miller Mix: A new hope
http://themillermix.blogspot.com/2011/03/new-hope.html
I sat with my sister today,. In the middle of early Spring. As we both cried about life's. Twists and turns and inevitable unfairness. With red eyes and tears flowing,. She admitted she thinks about death -. Anxiety slicing her like a knife -. Long after she should be sleeping. Night after night after eternal night. Only 30 years old, yet aged. By a lifetime spent chasing life. Now one kidney, two new lungs,. And more fight may break her. I don't know how or when. I'll have to tell her goodbye,. This is ...

Fiction: Deep Into Midnight. Editing & Proofreading. Fiction: Deep Into Midnight. December 8, 2010. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. Make lots of good memories! The counter tops were spotless. Colleen prided herself in keeping the donut shop clean. Before having worked on the midnight shift, she’d never considered just how much work was involved. She removed the trays of donuts to wipe down the shelves and prepare for the next batch, washed the ashtrays, filled the sugar dispensers, put to...

Cultural commentary and musings on modern motherhood. Monday, February 8, 2010. Choices vs. Fait Accompli. A recent article in the New York Times. Captured my attention, not only for its subject matter, but also for the comments that it drew. In "How to Speak Nanny". Hilary Stout explored the uneasy relationships that exist between many working mothers and the women they hire to care for their children. But it was the comments. On the article that really got me. 1 Why don't you raise your own kids? 2 The...

The Kitchen Witch: Save-My-Ass Summer: Grilled Jalapeno Poppers
http://thekitchwitch.blogspot.com/2010/06/save-my-ass-summer-grilled-jalapeno.html
Friday, June 18, 2010. Save-My-Ass Summer: Grilled Jalapeno Poppers. Ahem In case you hadn't noticed, the weather's heating up. That means shorts. Mini-skirts. The dreaded swimsuit and the baring of post-winter backside. I don't know about you, but the first exhibition of pasty, stew-fortified winter skin makes me cringe. So how do we cope? Gaining weight in the winter is natural right? It's biology in action- fat is nature's Snuggie, n'est ce pas? Scrawny caboose might be able to handle traditional jala...

A Place Powered By Love. March 15, 2013. FEBRUARY 14, 2013. I left My Heart in Bukavu. I scrawled these very words in perma-ink on a citrus-colored wall at City of Joy on Valentine’s Day. That day, history was made when One Billion Rising. How far do they have to travel for drinking water? If I had to live amongst them for one day, how would I do? In these conditions, the walls and floors and promise of City of Joy were built. LIVING IN THE IN-BETWEEN WORLD. Cynicism, Back to Congo and One Billion Rising.

Mind, Body, Soul. August 16, 2015. Back in May my Mum and I went on a day trip to Sydney (a 6:30am flight and a 6:30pm flight) in order to get my visa approved for my trip to the US. Today is actuall my last day at camp! Much more alive and vibrant than Brisbane. I don't think I could ever live there permanently though (let alone in any city) because I always find the hustle and bustle of big cities overwhelming. City of New York! August 2, 2015. Phillip's and Amanda's journey half the way around the world. Monday, January 2, 2012. Germany, Berlin: New Year at Teufelsberg. Yesterday night we had such a blast. As all of you know, we're in 2012 now. According to some, the last year of our existence. We don't believe in that, but we'll hurry to get to New Zealand before the end is near, though. And we celebrated our possibly last new year's eve by going to the Teufelsberg. This is an artifical hill made of heaped up rubbish after the second World War.
